About Fabric Care Answers
Fabric Care Answers is an independent UK guide for people mid-laundry-mishap — a stain that just happened or was found dried-in three days later, a wool jumper that came out a size smaller, a “dry clean only” label they’re tempted to ignore, a room of drying clothes that smells worse than before the wash. We cover what people actually search for: stains, shrinking and sizing mishaps, delicate-fibre care (wool, cashmere, silk), indoor drying and static, and everyday upkeep like pilling.
Search any of those and most answers come from someone selling something — a cashmere brand’s “care guide” written to sell more knitwear, a cleaning-supplies wholesaler content-marketing its own chemicals, or a stain-remover product page. Plenty of that advice is sound. Plenty of it also assumes you need their specific product for a job washing-up liquid or a splash of white vinegar would have solved, or skips the bit where the garment genuinely can’t be saved. That is the gap this site exists to fill.
How We Work
We are not launderers, dry cleaners or a detergent brand, and we do not claim to have personally shrunk or saved the exact garment we write about. What we do is read fibre-care guidance from bodies like Woolmark, testing organisations like Which?, and manufacturer instructions properly, and check them against what people consistently report in real discussion threads. Where the evidence points one way, we say so. Where people genuinely disagree — hand wash or a machine’s wool cycle, dry clean or a careful home wash — we weigh it and tell you which way we would lean.
Our position, in one line: diagnose the fibre and the mishap correctly first, act fast where speed matters, question the miracle product, and be honest about the rare mishaps that genuinely can’t be undone. Most laundry mishaps are dealt with for the cost of a bottle of stain remover, not a replacement garment.
What that looks like in practice:
- Correct diagnosis first — what actually happened to the fabric, not a guess dressed up as a method
- The mechanism in a sentence, so you can judge the advice for yourself
- A plain note when a product or a “miracle” method is oversold
- UK conditions — UK wash-temperature conventions, UK product names, UK prices
- Honest about the limits — we tell you when a garment is a lost cause, and why
What We Won’t Do
- No overclaiming. We never promise a method will “completely remove” a stain or “fully restore” a shrunk garment — some mishaps are genuinely permanent, and we say so rather than sending you on a fourth failed attempt.
- No invented tests. We do not publish fabricated “before and after” stain-removal results or claim to have tested products ourselves.
- No fabricated testimonials. We never invent personal-use stories, brand quotes or reader letters. Experience is attributed to where it came from.
